What is NBN™?

The National Broadband Network or NBN is a new high speed internet network being built in Australia. Replacing the existing broadband infrastructure, it aims to provide access to a faster and more reliable internet service (data and phone) wherever you live.

The NBN is gradually being rolled out across Australia, meaning not everybody is ready to connect now to the NBN. Even if NBN has reached your suburb, your home may or may not be ready as the roll out can take different amounts of time depending on what technology is required. Why do I need to know about the NBN?

It is important to know whether your home or business is ready or when it is expected to arrive, to make sure you are not affected by any service interruptions. After a certain period of time once the NBN becomes available to you, they will start the process of switching off the old phone and internet service and you may lose your existing home phone number if you have not yet switched over to the NBN.

There are a few different internet speeds to choose from when you switch to the nbn. Because different types of nbn technologies and other general factors can affect the speed of your internet, there are several options available to help you get the right speed for your place.

Value 12

Typical Evening Speeds 10mbps

Ideal for small households with one or two devices connected and basic phone or internet usage like emailing and web-browsing. This speed is similar to what your current ADSL can reach.

Family 50

Typical Evening Speeds 43mbps

Good for families and households with multiple devices and for activities like online shopping and streaming videos.

Fast 100

Typical Evening Speeds 82mbps

A great options for those who work from home, want to stream in high definition or upload and download large files.

Actual data speeds may vary and the download and upload speeds stated are the maximum each tier can deliver. General factors which can influence the speed of your internet include:

  • How many people are using your internet at one time
  • The type and source of content being downloaded or used such as 4K videos or gaming
  • What’s happening on the local network at a given time e.g. living in a busy neighbourhood or during peak hour
  • The connection method to the premises (fixed or wireless)
  • Your hardware, software, configuration, network or operating system

Installation and Activation process

Connecting to the NBN is simple with Flip.

  • Sign up online- Choose your speed and add-ons then fill out a few details on our basic online form.
  • You may receive a call or SMS- This is to simply confirm your order and to explain and arrange any further installation processes if required (such as site appointment date) or to notify you if the connection is a new development.
  • Activation- we’ll notify you once you’re active and provide any configuration details (BYO modems).
